This section details where common pick-up (or social/training) games are likely to occur in Tasmania. Until a few years back, pick-up games in Hobart were traditionally the most regular form of ultimate played in Hobart, although since 2001 regular evening leagues have also been run, and these league games, as well as some other games held outside of working hours are becoming more popular than the traditional lunchtime pickup games! The main pick-up games were played twice weekly in their hey day, at lunchtimes at the University of Tasmania, but there are other occasional pickup games that are held somewhat sporadically. Pick-up is an American term which refers to any game where you turn up and form teams on the day.
Pick-up games are still held semi-regularly the University of Tasmania on Friday lunch times (1-2pm) on the University Oval - the top oval with nice lush green grass, just below the Geology Department. These games are less regular during University holidays and are played on fields which are arguably the best quality fields used for pick-up anywhere in Australia (the view of Mt Wellington is spectacular!). These games are organised by the University of Tasmania Ultimate Frisbee Club.
To play, you are supposed to be a member of the club. Have a chat to Shavawn if you'd like to join; she can sign you up in the University of Tasmania Ultimate Frisbee Club - for around $6.00 for Uni staff or students. Others may need to join the Sports Union or the AFDA for insurance purposes. You are not covered by University medical insurance in these games if you are not a member of the Tasmanian University Union.
Pick-up games were sometimes held (e.g. Autumn and Spring 2005) at the University of Tasmania on Wednesday evenings (6-7pm) either on the University Oval - the top oval with nice lush green grass, just below the Geology Department, or at the Rugby Field if the oval is being used. In autumn or winter these games are played under lights, so bring along a couple of dollars to pay for the use of the lights. These games are a little bit irregular, but often pop up between leagues and continue while interest is maintained. Contact Matt Smith if you want to confirm whether or not a game is on, or check out the messages on the tas-ultimate email group.
Pick-up games are sporadically held on Sunday afternoons, often at the(University Oval - the top oval with nice lush green grass, just below the Geology Department, or at the Rugby Field if the oval is being used. These games are often high standard games and are sometimes associated with training for teams travelling to the mainland. Check out the messages on the tas-ultimate email group if you want to know if these games are being played.
An independent group was playing over the summer for a couple of years or so prior to 2002, comprising some players who have real jobs and can't make it to lunch time games. This group played regularly over the summer (during daylight saving) either at South Hobart, or if it was hot at Taroona High School, followed by a swim at Hinsby Beach. It seems that this group is now defunct. If you want more details, you could try contacting Gabby, who used to play with this group.
