2009 Hobart Summer Social League

Overview

The 2009 Summer Social League ran for 11 weeks from January 26 to April 6th on Monday evenings, from 6:00-8:30pm (with 2 divisions), at Sandown Park, in Lower Sandy Bay. Beginners and new players were most welcome. The league co-ordinators were Michael and Pat Dunne.

Summer League was played outdoors on our traditional fields at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. New and intermediate players were encouraged to come along to a free "Come and Try" session, which was run from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday January 19. This is a great way for new players to learn about ultimate and the Summer League, and to try the game before signing up for the league. Intermediate players were also welcome to try and learn some new, or polish up on some old, skills before the league started.

Summer League 2009

Social Division

Social Division is a league for work/friend based teams that just want to have a bit of very casual fun, and is perfect for new players and juniors. The league's focus is on introducing new players to the game and building basic skills. By playing in the Social Division you will experience the likes of "the force", "stacking" and "cutting". If these terms mean nothing to you, then this is the right league for you! If required, more experienced players can be assigned to new teams to help introduce you to this exciting game!

Div 1

Div 1 is for all you players out there who have a bit of Ulti experience. If you have played a few leagues before and are coming back for more, then this league is for you. Here you will experience well-spirited games whilst also being introduced some of the more advanced tactics use in Ultimate. Don't be scared, these new tactics will only help you to have more fun and there will be plenty of other players on your team to help you along if you are unsure about anything! Also keep in mind that Ultimate is a social sport games will be played accordingly.

Dates and Times

Spirit!

Spirit is a very important aspect of Ultimate and we'd like to ensure that everyone plays games in a Spirited fashion. More will be said about Spirit when the league starts, but for now here's a great description of Spirit (from the rules!):

"Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behaviour are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players."

Fees

Summer registration fees were as follows (same fee for each division):

All prices include AFDA membership for the duration of the league.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues were based on the WFDF rules, which were updated in 2008. The League Organiser takes the position of the TD under these rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here. There are a few exceptions to these rules and a couple of recent modifications.

Footwear

For the safety of players and their opponents, all participants in Div 1 were required to wear cleats (ie. football, soccer, or touch boots).

While it is not a requirement that players participating in the Social Division wear cleats, it is highly recommended, as the playing surface may get slippery in the evenings.

No exposed metal is allowed on footwear.
