2007 Hobart Spring Social League

Overview

The 2007 Splendid Spring League ran for 10 weeks from October 15 to December 10 on Monday evenings, from 6:00-8:20pm (with 2 divisions for the first time), at Sandown Park, in Lower Sandy Bay. The league co-ordinator was Jason de Puit, with some help from Masni Bennett. Beginners and new players were most welcome.

Spring League was played outdoors at our traditional fields at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. This league started on Monday October 16 and ran from 5:30-8:00pm, every Monday night until the finals on Monday December 11. Beginners and new players were most welcome.

One free Learn to Play session was run from 6:00-7:30pm on Monday October 8. This was a great way for new players to learn about ultimate and the Spring League, and to try the game before signing up for the league!

Jase's Splendid Spring League blurb

Hello and welcome to the Splendid Spring League 2007! We know this is the one you've been waiting for. Time to get out of those thermals, into those cleats, and out into the long lush green fields of Sandown Park, in Lower Sandy Bay. If you're anything like us you can't wait to get outside and run around with a disc again!

So, what do we have for you this Spring? A rather exciting League, that's what! This year sees the introduction of some fairly radical changes to our beloved Spring League, all with the intention of making the league bigger and better than ever before! Read on for details of some important changes that you will need to be aware of.

Divisions!

Yes, the rumours are true - this league will see the introduction of divisions to Spring League. The intention behind this change is to allow everyone to have the most fun possible, playing well-spirited Ultimate against other players who are at a similar skill level to you. By creating these divisions we hope to provide everyone with a great time on the field whilst maintaining a good level of competition. The divisions are as follows:

Social Division

Social Division is designed for our new players and our juniors. This is also the league for work/friend based teams that just want to have a bit of very casual fun. This league will focus on introducing new players to the game and building basic skills. By playing in this league you will experience the likes of "the force", "stacking" and "cutting". If these terms mean nothing to you, then this is the right league for you! We'll also be after a couple of more experienced players per team to help train all the beginners and mentor them through the season.

Div 1

Div 1 is for all you players out there who have a bit of Ulti experience. If you played one or two leagues before and are coming back for more then this league is for you. Here you will experience well-spirited Ultimate whilst also being introduced some slightly more advanced Ultimate tactics. Don't be scared, these new tactics will only help you to have more fun and there will be plenty of other players on your team to help you along if you are unsure about anything! Also keep in mind that this is still a division inside a Social league and games will be played accordingly.

Dates and Times

Spirit!

We've already mentioned Spirit a few times in this introduction but now we're going to write a whole section on it. That's how much we love it! Spirit is a very important aspect of Spring League and we'd like to ensure that everyone is playing in a Spirited fashion and on the same page when it comes to Spirit. The best way to ensure we're playing a great Spirited league is to ensure that everyone is clear about what Spirit actually is, and how to give Spirit scores. More will be said about Spirit when the league starts, but for now here's a great description of Spirit (from the rules!):

"Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behaviour are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players."

Along with that, here's the suggested way to gauge Spirit scores for your games:

Spirit is scored out of 10 (no half points). The following can be used as a guideline for scoring spirit.

Fees

Spring registration fees were as follows (same fee for each division):

All prices include AFDA membership for the duration of the league.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the WFDF rules, which were updated as of April 2007. The League Organiser takes the position of the TD under these rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here. There are a few exceptions to these rules and a couple of recent modifications.

Spring Division 1 Schedule

With two lit fields (there are no lights on the back block) and 6 teams in division 1, there were two time slots initially, with 2 games from 7:00-7:45pm and the third game from 7:45-8:30pm. Unfortunately the expected lights at Sandown Park were not working so the first week saw shortened games in dark conditions. The schedule had to be revised for later weeks.

Date Time Round Field 1 (Mountain) Field 2 (River)
Oct 15 7.00 1 4 Lily v White Goods Enforcers v Short Circuit
7.45 1 Foxtrot Hotel v UTas

Given the lack of adequate lighting for Div 1 games in week 1, both the location and the schedule for week 2 was revised for rounds 2 to 4, with 3 games and two time slots at the Rugby Fields, Sandy Bay.

Date Time Round Field 1 (Gym) Field 2 (Hedge)
Oct 22 7.15 2 UTas v 4 Lily Foxtrot Hotel v Enforcers
8.00 2 White Goods v Short Circuit pickup game?
Oct 29 7.15 3 Foxtrot Hotel v 4 Lily UTas v Short Circuit
8.00 3 Enforcers v White Goods
Nov 5 7.15 4 UTas v White Goods Foxtrot Hotel v Short Circuit
8.00 4 Enforcers v 4 Lily

From Round 5 onwards, Division 1 moved back to Sandown Park, with three games played simultaneously starting at 7:00pm, with the game length increasing as the daylight hours increase, but initially lasting until around 8pm.

Date Round Field 1 (Mountain) Field 2 (River) Field 3 (Back Block)
Nov 12 5 UTas v Enforcers Foxtrot Hotel v White Goods 4 Lily v Short Circuit
Nov 19 6 Enforcers v Short Circuit 4 Lily v White Goods Foxtrot Hotel v UTas
Nov 26 7 Foxtrot Hotel v Enforcers UTas v 4 Lily White Goods v Short Circuit

The schedule for the finals for division 1 follows:

Date Round Field 1 (Mountain) Field 2 (River) Field 3 (Back Block)
Dec 3 8 (qualifying finals) B: UTas v Enforcers C: 4 Lily v Foxtrot Hotel A: Short Circuit v White Goods
Dec 10 9 (ranking finals) grand final: Short Circuit v UTas 3rd place playoff: Enforcers v 4 Lily 5th place playoff: Foxtrot Hotel v White Goods

The qualifying finals for division 1 were cancelled due to lightning, so the ranking finals were based on positions at the end of the minor round.

For the ranking finals UTas had no women turn up, so they were forced to forfeit. This saw a revision of the final schedule, with UTas allowed to play in the 3rd vs 4th playoff and Enforcers promoted to the grand final.

Date Round Field 1 (Mountain) Field 2 (River) Field 3 (Back Block)
Dec 10 9 (ranking finals) grand final: Short Circuit v Enforcers 3rd place playoff: UTas v 4 Lily 5th place playoff: Foxtrot Hotel v White Goods

Finals format

The format for the finals of Spring League saw every team playing in the finals over a two week period, with qualifying finals in the first week and ranking finals in the following week. This format means that only the top 3 teams were playing for the right to win the league, the teams ranked 4th and 5th could only finish as high as 3rd place and the team ranked 6th could only finish as high as 5th place. The top ranked team could not finish lower than 2nd place and the teams ranked 2nd and 3rd could not finish lower than 4th place.

Date Round Field 1 (Mountain) Field 2 (River) Field 3 (Back Block)
Dec 3 8 (qualifying finals) B: 2nd v 3rd C: 4th v 5th A: 1st v 6th
Dec 10 9 (ranking finals) grand final: 1st v winner B 3rd place playoff: loser B v winner C 5th place playoff: loser C v 6th

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Jason (and Maz) for their work as Spendid Spring League organisers!

League Organisers' Report

Here's a bit of a wrap up for Spring League.

Firstly, the winners in each division were as follows:

Division Premiers Spirit Winners
Social Division Captain Wonderpants Eat Your Greens
Division 1 Short Circuit Enforcers

Congratulations to everyone on the winning teams. The Social Div final was particularly close and ended up going to extra time to a deserved win by Captain Wonderpants.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming along and making this a really successful Spring League, our biggest yet! I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and got your frisbee-fill for Spring League. There were a few hiccups with fields and lightening along the way but overall I think things ran pretty smoothly.

I'd also like to make special note of some of hard working Tasmanian Ultimate Association Admin peoples. There's quite a few people who dedicate a lot of time behind the scenes to make sure these leagues continue to run for everyone. In no particular order I'd like to thanks Joe Boyer, Jemery Day, Shavawn Donoghue, Jeff Dunn and Maz Bennett. They all gave me a lot of a support, assistance and advice during the league so thanks guys!

Finally, for more Frisbee Fun please sign up for Summer League! All the details are on the website but if you have any questions or would like some advice on which league to play in feel free to email Joe.

I'll see you all (hopefully actually on the fields for me this time) at Summer League!

Cheers,
- Jase
