2006 Hobart Autumn B-League

Overview

With the advent of the new A-League, the traditional Monday night social league is now known as the Autumn Social B-League and was played outdoors under lights at the Uni Oval, Sandy Bay. This 7 week league ran on Monday evenings, 6-7pm from May 8 through to June 12, with the finals running for 2 hours from 6-8pm on Monday June 19. Beginners and new players were most welcome.

The league co-ordinator for the Autumn League was Dave Cooke and Dave collected the money for league registration.

Because field space was limited for this league, it operated on a strictly first in best dressed basis, with total player numbers capped at 48 players (12 per team), with a minimum of 3 women per team. This means that a minimum of 12 spots were reserved for women on the registration list and a maximum of 36 male pre-registrations allowed. Late male registrations were placed on a reserve list and were allocated in the week prior to 1st game.

One free Learn to Play session was played from 6-7pm on Monday May 1 at the Uni Oval. This was a great way for new players to learn about ultimate and the Summer League, and to try the game before signing up for the league!

Fees

Registration fees were as follows:

All prices included AFDA membership for the duration of the league.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League organiser takes the position of the TD under these rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here.

Rule Changes for Autumn League 2006

Cleats

In addition to these rules, playing in cleated shoes is compulsory in this league. This is a safety issue - the grounds are likely to be slippery and we don't want people getting hurt by losing their footing and straining muscles or worse. People invariably enjoy themselves more if they can run and chase without slipping. You can't stop and turn easily on wet grass and mud in runners.

Suitable footwear includes grass cats (touch footy shoes), or even better, given the conditions we expect at this time of year, soccer boots or football boots. Note that exposed metal on your cleats is strictly forbidden - so check those old rugby boots before using them! Paul's warehouse in Moonah has a huge range of last season's boots for $60-70. Or if you're struggling for cash, the tip shop in South Hobart has a few pairs of second hand boots at bargain basement prices...

Dropping the pull

Unlike previous social leagues in Hobart, dropping the pull now results in a turnover. If someone from your team touches the disc but fails to catch it when it is first thrown into play by the opposing team, then this will be deemed a turnover and your opponents will take possession of the disc. This is an official WFDF rule of ultimate frisbee, and the TUA committee has decided to finally start using this rule in all Hobart leagues.

Gender Matching

This is a mixed league, so each team should field a minimum of 2 of each sex on the field. Defensive teams should field the same number of men/women as the offensive team if possible. If an offensive team fields 3 women & 4 men, then the defensive team (team throwing the pull) should also field 3 women & 4 men (if possible). If the defensive team only has 2 women then they field 2 women and make up the numbers with men. These guidelines can be waived if a player needs to take a sub.

Weather Postponement

Ultimate normally only stops for lightning (it can be lots of fun playing in the rain - it's great for layouts!). But at Autumn league, it can get very cold standing on the sidelines in bad weather. Given that we only have one game each week, and the oval is free after 7pm each night, there is the option of postponing games to the following week if the weather is appalling. If the weather looks truly dreadful, the league organiser will send out an email to the tas-ultimate yahoogroup at 1pm if a decision is made to postpone the game to the following week. No email message means the game will proceed as planned. Games will only be postponed in extreme circumstances. Check your email after lunch on Monday if you want to check whether a game is on.

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Dave for his work as Autumn Social B-League organiser.

League Organiser's Report

Semi Final 1:

Colony 16 defeated Disc-o-techs 5
Although the score indicates a drubbing, Disc-o-techs played very well and pulled off some stunning completions. It was fantastic to see leadership from the girls, and some stack-directed back-up from the guys. Colony continued its flowing style, but will the pressure of the finals be too much for the minor premiers?

Semi Final 2:

Chlorophilliacs 10 defeated Vitamin C 8
Vitamin C raced out to an early lead but suffered a cruel blow when Duncan Robinson went down with a knee injury. This turned the course of the match, with Chlorophilliacs eventually overhauling Vitamin C and running out winners.

Final:

Colony 8 defeated Chlorophilliacs 5
A hard-fought, fast paced final. Colony got out to a 4-2 lead before Cholorphilliacs levelled the score through some tight zone defence. Chlorophilliacs then broke away to win the game with some elegant, flowing frisbee.

Awards:

Style in the final: The entire Colony team, for their general team play
Guts in the final: Rowan Miller (Chlorophilliacs), for getting a layout D, a layout catch and then almost completing another layout D in quick succession
Most Improved Player: Kathleen Downey (Disc-o-techs)
Best Recruiters: Kathleen Downey and Kylie Roberts (Disc-o-techs)
Spirit: Disc-o-techs
