2006 Hobart Autumn A-League

Overview

The 2006 Autumn A-League was Hobart's first official higher level league, replacing the Tasmanian Ultimate Championships with the formation of a 3 team league. Games between two of these teams in the Autumn A-League was held roughly once a fortnight on Sunday afternoons, initially at the Rugby Field, and then later at the Uni Oval. This league officially started on Sunday February 19 and ran from 4:00-5:30pm, every second Sunday afternoon (more or less) until the grand final on Sunday May 21.

The Autumn season of A-League was played at a new time slot 3:50-5:30pm on Sunday afternoons with three teams, based on geographic regions: South; Central and North. The Autumn season of A-League had 1 round every fortnight, with one team having a bye each round.

Intermediate and advanced level players were welcome to come along and play - we welcome new players. However, this league is intended to be as competitive as possible. If you prefer a slightly less competitive environment, then the Hobart Ultimate League may provide a better environment for you to play.

The league co-ordinator for the Autumn A-League was Aaron Pinkus.

Fees

Fees for the Autumn A-League were a very generous $0, given this was a developmental league. This fee structure will change in future as we start to book and pay for fields and pay full AFDA fees!

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League organiser takes the position of the TD under these rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here.

Round 1 (February 19)

The first round was held on Sunday February 19, with Central winning the first game 9-7 against the Northern Bogans. In addition to the new format for this league there is also a regular newsletter.

Round 2 (March 5)

The second round was the first round operating under the new name of the A-League and was held on Sunday March 5, with the Northern Bogans winning game 10-9 against the Southern Confederates. Issue 2 of the A-League newsletter is also out.

Round 3 (March 19)

The third round was held on Sunday March 19, with the Southern Confederates winning game 17-7 against Central. A-League history was made yesterday with the Southern Confederates becoming the first team to win by reaching the point cap of 17. Over 4 years of TUC and now A-League competition have been played with the illusive 17 never being reached before [well actually on June 15 2003, All Bounced Out beat Planet Red 17-15, but let's not spoil a good story!]. The Confederates won the match 17-7 making short work of a severely understrength Central team that will look to bounce back hard against the Bogans in the next match.

Round 4 (April 2)

The fourth round was held on Sunday April 2, with the Hobart Hurricane (formerly known as Central) finally getting their act together and coming up with a name, and winning the game 15-7 against the Northern Bogans.

Round 5 (April 30)

The fifth round was held on Sunday April 30, in persistent drizzle with the the Southern Confederates winning the game by forfeit over Hobart Hurricane. A pickup game of 5 on 5 was played instead.

Round 6 (May 7)

The sixth round was held on Sunday May 7, the Northern Bogans comprehensively defeating the Southern Confederates, 17-10. This saw the Northern Bogans not only qualify for the grand final, but end up as minor premiers.

Finals and Awards

League Organiser's Report

It was really exciting for me to see the inaugural season of A-League kick off as it did. All 3 teams had some good depth to their squads as well as some newer players that really rose to the new level of game that they were faced with.

The season was really close the whole way through with only 1 point separating all three teams in the end. This showed just how tight the competition really was. With such a strong start to A-League I feel that it can only improve in the future.

I would like to make a special mention about the final game as well. The Confederates won the final 17-10 in real style with some great play. It was also commendable to see the Bogans fight back from 11-1 down to reach double figures before the end. The Style in the final award goes to Michael Dunne for his first ever layout catch in the endzone. (We’d all been waiting a long time for this). The Guts in the final was awarded to Stan Robert for yet another inspirational game.

I would like to make a special mention to the following players who all improved a lot over the competition. Kunal and Basil from South. Nigel from the Bogans. And Tory from Hobart Hurricane. All these players I thought have improved out of sight since the start of the A-League and I hope they and many more players continue to improve their skills in this competition. However, I believe one player has really stood out as improving a lot since the start of the tournament. So the most improved goes to Rowan Miller for an outstanding first season in the new A-League.

Aaron.

Grand final (May 21)

The Southern Confederates won the first Hobart A-League grand final taking their first victory of the season against the minor premiers, the Northern Bogans with a final score of 17-10. The Southern Confederates started very strongly, taking the first half 9-1, before the Northern Bogans stepped it up a notch, outscoring the Confederates in the second half. Unfortunately this run started a little late in the game for the Bogans. The spirit prize was also shared by these two teams.
