The 2002 Hobart Spring Ultimate League was Hobart's fifth Ultimate league, following on from the first full year of successful 2001 Spring, 2002 Summer, 2002 Autumn and 2002 Winter Leagues. This league ran on Tuesday evenings, returning to our original league fields at the Sandown Park.
Spring league ran as a 4 team league, from Tuesday October 22, 2002 to Tuesday December 17, 2002. Beginners and new players were especially welcome. Contact the league co-ordinator, Jeff, if you want more information.
For more details and the full sales pitch, see the funky flyer.
Pre-registration league fees for the TUA Spring league were: $20 and $15 for students and those under 21, as long as you registered electronically and paid by October 14, 2002. This price did not include AFDA membership. If you missed the pre-registration deadline or wanted to register on paper, league fees cost an additional $5.
It is compulsory for all players in TUA leagues to be AFDA members. AFDA membership benefits include full public liability insurance coverage while participating in or organising any flying disc activity, some personal injury insurance (see AFDA insurance page for full details) while participating in or attending any flying disc activity in Australia, and discounts obtained from organisations/companies by the AFDA for members (such as Rebel Sport and travel discounts). Further information is available from www.afda.com.
The rules for the Hobart Spring Ultimate League, were based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the local rules here. These rules were agreed by the TUA committee in 2002.
A series of notes and guidelines for TUA social league captains, including duties for league captains was initially prepared by previous league organisers, including Jeff Dunn and Leslie Tse. An updated version for this league is available as a Captain's Handbook. While this was written for captains, other players may be interested to see what their captain were supposed to be doing and to see some guidelines for the social league.
There were two games per night, game 1 from 6:00-6:45 and game 2 from 7:00-7:45. The full schedule for the Spring League 2002 was:

The following report on the finals and overview of the league is from the League Organiser, Jeff Dunn:
Very quick wrap-up! Thanks to you all for playing the league, and hope to see you again at Summer league.
Great games played on finals night, although even the Bats were struggling for numbers. In the first round play-offs, Gryffindor beat Tequila Bats and Sexy Jeff just snuck ahead of TAFI Poachers. Then TAFI beat the Bats to take 3rd place, and Sexy Jeff whipped Gryffindor to win overall. The finals game awards: Cheery Ripe (style) and Chupa Chups (suicidal sacrifice?) awards went to Christian and Joe, respectively.
The Violet Crumble best recruiter award went to Andrew Shepherd, obviously!
The Tim Tams award for most improved new player was fortunately not my decision - and was really beyond any of us to decide - so I gave it to Shep to award as he saw fit!
All season the Spirit prize was going to go to Sexy - but their forfiets killed them - so Tequila Bats romped away with it! Well done Bats!
I think that's all!? Thanks to people who helped during the league, to the captains, to the TUA folk, to Mamoru for running the 4 previous leagues, and to Leslie for taking on the Summer League organising.
See you all next year - and over the break, don't be caught anywhere without a disc to practise with.
Merry Christmas,
Jeff
