TUA News Archive - 2010

December

December 23 Registration is now open for the 2011 Summer League with late fees kicking in from January 11. Summer League will run on Monday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm from January 17 until March 28 with a couple of weeks off for public holidays on February 14 and March 14. Full details on this league are available on the Summer League page. Thanks to Andy Cole and his team of helpers for offering to run this league. There will be a free learn to play session on Monday January 10 at Sandown Park from 6pm. New and less new players welcome!
December 7 The 2010 Spring Social League is now complete. Congratulations to Ninjaburger for doing the double in the social beginners league, wining both spirit and the league and to Microwave Danger for winning spirit in the social intermediate league and Gringo who finished the season very strongly and won the league, after finishing 4th with just two wins in the minor rounds. The grand final and the ranking finals for 3rd place in each division were all very close games, with a 1 point wining margin in every case. Congratulations to the prize winners in the social beginners division, Rebecca Dorgelo for Guts in the final, Joe Ferguson for Style in the final, rising stars Alice Patterson-Robert and Jack Redpath and best recruiters the ambos Elvin Lea, Jessie Bresnehan and Kieran Blake. Congratulations also to the prize winners in the social intermediate division, Grady Cowley for Guts in the final and Tim Johnson for Style in the final. Thanks to Andrew Binny and David Cooke for running this league. More details including the final minor round table with final spirit scores can be found by following the appropriate links on the League History page.
December 6 The first week of finals have been played in the Spring Social League with a couple of upset results. In the social beginner division, 3rd placed Parabolic defeated 2nd placed Black to the Future in extra time and 6th placed Jellyfish defeated 5th placed Pink Panthers. The grand final in this division will see the minor round premiers Ninjaburger play Parabolic. In the social intermediate division, 4th placed Gringo defeated minor premiers Bread and 6th placed Song 3 defeated 5th placed Microwave Danger in extra time. This results in a grand final between UTas and Gringo. The placing finals have changed slightly from those originally advertised - check the schedule for full details. Remember these are both social leagues - the finals structure and philosophy behind this league places more emphasis on participation, learning and spirit of the game than winning or losing and final rankings. Look out for an announcement on Summer League soon.

November

November 22 The final minor round games in the Spring Social League have been played. There were no changes to the top two positions in the social beginner league table, but there were some upsets. After jumping from 5th to 3rd last week, Pink Panthers slipped back to 5th position after a very narrow loss to RED - with only 1 point separating the teams ranked 3rd to 5th. This means that Parabolic and RED finish in 3rd and 4th place with a chance to qualify for the grand final the following week, with Parabolic taking on second placed Black to the Future, who they beat this week to retain their place in the top 4, and RED taking on the minor round premiers Ninjaburger. Pink Panthers play Jellyfish in the remaining final. There were no changes in the ranking in the social intermediate league table, despite 5th place Microwave Danger defeating 4th placed Gringo, and finishing tied on points, and 3rd placed Whatever we're called beating 2nd placed UTas, and also finishing tied on points - but in both cases the tie breaker maintained the status quo in rankings. This means the finals will see 1st placed Bread playing 4th placed Gringo and 2nd place UTas repeat their game against 3rd placed Whatever we're called (mirroring the situation in social beginners). The remaining final sees Microwave Danger play Song 3. Remember, no pickup players are allowed in the finals.
November 16 The fifth round of games in the Spring Social League have been played. Ninjaburger maintain their lead over Black to the Future in the social beginner league table with Pink Panthers jumping from 5th position to 3rd. Ninjaburger are now guaranteed to finish in the top 4 and Jellyfish are the only team which cannot make the top 4 now. Bread hang on to first place extended their lead in the social intermediate league table, despite a loss to Whatever we're called who moved up to 3rd position. All 6 teams can still potentially make the top 4, with one more game remaining before the finals kick off. Updated team lists are now available for both the beginner and intermediate social divisions.
November 10 The fourth round of games in the Spring Social League have been played. Ninjaburger have taken over first place from Black to the Future in the social beginner league table after winning the top of the table clash in this division. In contrast Bread extended their lead in the social intermediate league table after defeating second placed UTas, with Gringo moving up into 3rd place.
November 2 The third round of games in the Spring Social League have been played. Black to the Future held on to first place outright from Ninjaburger in the social beginner league table and likewise in the social intermediate league table with Bread holding on to top spot, but still tied on points with UTas with three wins each. Next week sees top of the table clashes in both divisions.

October

October 26 The second round of games in the Spring Social League have been played. Black to the Future have taken first place outright from Ninjaburger in the social beginner league table and Bread have maintained top spot in the social intermediate league table, although still tied on points with UTas with two wins. The full game schedule for both the beginner and intermediate social divisions is now available.
October 25 Congratulations to LOG! who won the spirit of the game award in the recently completed Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships held in Bathurst this weekend, the first Tasmanian Mixed team to win Spirit at a National Championship. After a fast start (two wins) LOG! had a series of tougher games (including playing the eventual tourney winners) with 5 straight losses, before finishing on a high with two wins, including a come from behind win on universal point to secure 17th place overall. Congratulations to Cath Matthews who won the coveted Female Most Valuable Player award, following on from two previous female MVP award winners from Tassie Mixed teams in 2008 and 2009 (Shavawn Donoghue and Shannon Trenwith). Congratulations also to Shavawn Donoghue and her Tournament Organising Committee for AMUC 2009 (held here in Hobart of course) for winning the AFDA's Tournament of the Year award, one of several AFDA awards presented at AMUC 2010.
October 24 If you are new to the game, want to get better quickly, or want to master some particularly tricky skill, come along to the free skills sessions before Spring League at Sandown Park run by Huddy Fuller from 5:20-5:50pm every Monday afternoon before league games start.
October 22 Good luck to LOG! the Tasmanian team playing at the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships in Bathurst right now. LOG! are seeded 14th out of 26 teams and have started with a tight win (12-10) over The Incredibles (SA3, seed 19) and comfortable win (12-5) over the Bathurst Bulls (NSW 12, seed 26). LOG! faces some harder games against the Jericho Turnpike Bandits (NSW 2, seed 3) and John Doe (SQLD1, seed 11) later today, before playing Team Happy (ACT1, seed 6) and Mr Burns Casino (NSW 8, seed 22) to complete their pool games tomorrow. Good luck also to Eliza Burke-Polden who is playing for Funny Duck (Vic), and ex-Tasmanians Shelly Slater playing for Friskee (NSW) and Asher Gentle playing for Team Happy (ACT). Progressive results can be found either via the AFDA web site or the AMUC scores site.
October 21 The first week of games of the Spring Social League have been played. Bread have taken the early lead in the social intermediate league table and Ninjaburger have taken the early lead in the social beginner league table. Preliminary team lists for both the beginner and intermediate social divisions are now available.
October 18 Registration is still open for the Spring Social League including both beginner and intermediate divisions, although many teams are now full. If you still want to register, you should check to see if there are still places by talking to league organisers David Cooke or Andrew Binny first. Spring Social League is running on Monday evenings from 6:00-8:50pm from October 18 until December 6. Due to a large number of registrations, this league now has 12 teams, with 6 teams in each division. This is the highest number of teams registered since Spring League 2007. Due to this increase in the number of players, games will be played at both Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay and the Rugby Field at the University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay with a range of game start times, depending on the location. Beginner games all start at 6pm, but intermediate games have variable start times and field locations. Check the schedule to make sure you know when and where you are playing, especially this week when two of the fields at Sandown Park were unexpectedly closed. Preliminary team lists for both the beginner and intermediate social divisions are now available. The schedule for tonight's games is also available, and the full schedule for the whole season will be available soon.
October 16 The history page for Winter indoor league is now complete, with all minor round results now added to the final minor round table and final spirit scores. Want to relive the glory? Follow the appropriate links on the League History page.
October 11 Congratulations to the undefeated yellow team which won this year's twelfth Tasmanian Two-Hat tournament, held in near perfect conditions at Cornelian Bay. Thanks to Tournament Director Shavawn Donoghue and her Tournament Organising Committee of Emily Johnson, Emma Pharo and Alysia Prevost for all the hard work invested into running such a successful tournament. Full details will be available soon.
October 5 This year the Two-Hat party will be held at The Duke Restaurant/Bar, 192 Macquarie St, Hobart. The theme is “Mad-Hat”, so please bring along your craziest hat! More details on this and the latest information for Two-Hat players at the Two-Hat XII information for registered players link. Don't forget the Philip Redneck Ruddock Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic at St David's Park on Friday evening, teeing off at around 8:00pm. Of course there are the traditional two categories for this event, skirt wearers and non-skirt wearers.
October 3 Congratulations to Gender across for taking out the double, winning both the spirit prize and the league in the recently completed Winter indoor league. Gender across won a close the final defeating Utas 14-12. Other prize winners include Huddy Fuller for Guts in the final, Elvin Lea for Style in the final, rising stars Cate Lansdell and Nick Marendy and best recruiter Celina Wilson. Thanks to Alysia Prevost for running this league. September

September 30 Registration is now open for the Spring Social League including both beginner and intermediate divisions. There will be a free Learn to Play session on Monday October 11 (the day after the Two-Hat) from 6-7:30pm and late fees will apply for all registrations paid for after that date. Spring Social League will run on Monday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm from October 18 until some time in December (the final date depends on Carols by Candlelight), at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. Thanks to Dave Cooke and Andrew Binny for running this league.
September 28 Registration for the Tasmanian Two-Hat XII is still open although you need to hurry if you still want to register. The Two-Hat will be held on the weekend of October 9-10. Information on how to register and details of the tournament (including disc golf on the Friday night) can be found at the Two-Hat page.
September 27 News updates have a been a little thin on the ground lately (sorry!) - but plenty has been happening, including Steve Wright and Tim Stoneman playing for the Australian under 19 open team in Germany in August. This team finished in 8th position (4th in spirit) and Tim and Steve must have some stories to share. There was also a University of Tasmania team at Southern University Games, the first UTas team to travel for a couple of years, coming back with bronze medals in July. Congratulations also to Gender across for winning both the league and spirit in the recently completed Winter Indoor league at Aurora stadium. Thanks to Alysia Prevost for running this league. Full results and prize winners from this league should appear on the League History page soon.

August

August 7 Registration for the Tasmanian Two-Hat XII is now open. The Two-Hat will be held on the weekend of October 9-10. Information on how to register can be found at the Two-Hat page.

July

July 10 Registration is now open for the Winter Indoor League with late fees kicking in from July 24. Winter League will run on Sunday afternoons from 3:45-6:00pm from August 1st until September 26th, at Aurora Sports Stadium, Creek Road, New Town. Thanks to Alysia Prevost for running this league.
July 9 Rumour has it that the UTas team ended up with the bronze medal at Southern University Games, finishing up in third place. Congratulations to the team. More details when the information comes to hand.
July 8 Stop! Hammertime! did win spirit and Matt Platts won the Autumn League defeating Clockwork in the grand final 12-7. Other prize winners include Mark Verrall for Guts in the final, Matt Platts for Style in the final, rising stars Matthew Berne and Hayley Saltmarsh and best recruiters Huddy Fuller and Eliza Burke-Polden. Thanks to Matt Smith for running this league. More details including the final minor round table with final spirit scores can be found by following the appropriate links on the League History page. Look out for an announcement on Winter league registration shortly.
July 6 There is a University of Tasmania ultimate team currently competing at the Southern University Games. The first day saw the UTas team win their first game against Vic Uni, followed by a close loss against LaTrobe and another loss to Flinders University. Given the number of beginner players on this team, this is an excellent first day. It is great to see a UTas team travel to the mainland for the first time since 2007. Good luck to the team for the second day of the tournament, when they face Ballarat Uni, and then repeat games against Vic Uni, La Trobe and Flinders Uni. Thanks also to Eliza and Huddy for the work they put in to nurturing and developing this team.

June

June 29 Rumour has it that Stop! Hammertime! won spirit and Matt Platts won the Autumn League, by beating Clockwork in the grand final. Confirmation of this result, prize winners and other league results will hopefully be available soon.
June 27 Registration for halfWIT II (a one day indoor tournament to be played on July 18) is still open. According to the TDs places are filling quickly, so you better sign up soon if you don't want to miss out. Late registration fees apply from July 6 onwards.
June 25 The final minor round games in the Autumn League have been played. Pirate Ninja Party lost a game and swapped positions with UTAS for 5th and 6th place, but there were no other changes to the previous league table, and fortunately the final minor round ladder didn't require the tie-breakers as it seems that nobody knew the rules to split ties! The semi-finals saw three upsets, with 4th placed Clockwork defeating minor premiers Graph Theory 11-6 and 3rd placed Matt Platts defeating 2nd placed Caught Short 14-11. In the bottom half, 7th placed Stop! Hammertime! upset 6th placed Pirate Ninja Party 12-11. The only semi-final going to seed saw 5th place UTAS beat 8th placed Sheep Stations 18-11. Final ranking games and the grand final will be played this Sunday. Don't forget to bring some salad, snacks or drinks to share and your own plate and cup.
June 16 The seventh week of games in the Autumn League have been played. Still no changes to the top three positions on the Autumn League table (yawn), with all three of these teams having two wins this week. As predicted, the real action was in the fight for 4th place with Clockwork now guaranteed a place in the top four with two wins this week. Clockwork effectively had two preliminary finals this week, beating both teams they were tied with on points, Pirate Ninja Party and UTAS and opening a 4 point lead on these two teams. Next week sees the final minor round games followed by semi-finals, with all top 4 teams in with a chance of wining the league and the bottom four teams battling for positions 5 to 8.
June 10 The fifth and sixth (half) week of games in the Autumn League have been played. Still no changes to the top three positions on the Autumn League table, even with three straight losses to 3rd place Matt Platts and with 2nd placed Caught Short inflicting the first defeat of the season on league leaders Graph Theory. The real action on the ladder is the fight for 4th place and a position in the semi-finals. Pirate Ninja Party currently hold 4th place, but are tied on points with both Clockwork and UTAS, with UTAS being the team on the rise with three wins from the last three games. All three teams won their only games in week 6 to maintain their relative positions in the table. Watch out for some tough matches next week when Clockwork play each of these other two teams. Oh, the excitement! Note that the game schedule and finals format has changed slightly after last week's shortened round.

May

May 24 The fourth week of games in the Autumn League have been played. The top three teams seem to be boringly entrenched in their positions in the Autumn League table - but only three points separate the bottom five teams. Stop! Hammertime! stand out as the only team to have tied two games. Pirate Ninja Party moved from 5th to 4th and Stop! Hammertime! moved from 8th to 7th place. If you haven't registered and still want to play, get in touch with the league organiser, Matt Smith.
May 20 Full details and nominations of all the award winners from the TUA Annual Dinner are now available on the TUA wiki, with information on the awards and their criteria and details of the award winners from both 2009 and 2010, including full results of the popular vote for entries into the Spirit Hall of Fame (David Cooke) and Player of the Year (Mike Baker). The other major prize winners were Chris Mrzyk and Jess Bresnehan who won the inaugural TUA male and female Rising Star awards.
May 18 The third week of games in the Autumn League have been played. Full team lists and game schedule are still available. Graph Theory have maintained their top of the Autumn League table position from Caught Short followed by Matt Platts now clear in 3rd place in their own right. The only tie on points is between the 5th and 6th ranked teams, Pirate Ninja Party and UTAS. If you haven't registered and still want to play, get in touch with the league organiser, Matt Smith. Note that the fourth week of games (May 23rd) run from 5-7pm (as a one off) instead of the usual 4-6pm time slot.
May 13 The second week of games in the Autumn League have been played. Full team lists and game schedule are now available. Graph Theory have taken over the lead from Caught Short in the Autumn League table followed by three teams with 2 wins and two losses each. If you haven't registered and still want to play, get in touch with the league organiser, Matt Smith.
May 11 Congratulations to Dave Cooke for being the recipient of the TUA Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent TUA Annual Dinner. Congratulations also to the other major award recipients: Shavawn Donoghue, Volunteer of the Year Award; and Alysia Prevost, the Black and Blue Award. There were a number of minor awards presented as well - more details on these will follow shortly. Thanks to Maz, Shavawn, John, David Cooke and Beans for organising this dinner.
May 10 The first ever Tasmanian women's league kicks off this weekend at Aurora Sports Stadium with games starting at 3:00pm. If you would like any more information about the league, talk to Shavawn Donoghue. Otherwise head over to the Women's League information page and sign up now.
May 4 The first week of games in the Autumn League have been played. Preliminary team lists are now available. Team Pants have taken the early lead in the Autumn League table closely followed by Graph Theory with both of these teams having two wins. Four teams occupy the middle of the table with one win and one loss a piece. A full game schedule will be available soon. If you haven't registered and still want to play, get in touch with the league organiser, Matt Smith.
May 1 Autumn League starts this weekend. Don't forget to turn up on Sunday at 3:45 pm for a warm up. Bring warm clothes and water bottles! The teams look fairly full, so if you still want to register, you may want to talk to league organiser Matt Smith in a hurry! Full team lists and game schedule will be available soon, but it looks like there will be 8 teams with 4 courts in action and each team playing two games per week.

April 8 The finals have been played and Summer league is now over. In the social beginners division, congratulations go to joint spirit and league winners Cocaine (winning both titles is very impressive), league winners Wobblies and to award winners: Tim Stoneman (best recruiter); Emily Bond and Dan Henderson (most improved); Andrew Johnston (style in the final) and Tarik Stoneman (guts in the final). In the social intermediate division, congratulations go to spirit winners Huckasaurus, league winners Parma and to award winners: Halena Bilton (style in final) and Grady Cowley (guts in the final). Full results (including final spirit rankings and scores) are now available on the Summer League 2010 history page. Results of all previous leagues can be found via links on the League history page. Thanks to Andrew Binny for running this league. Meanwhile, don't forget to register for for Autumn League soon - late fees kick in if you register (or pay) after April 26.

March

March 24 Last night's AGM for the Tasmanian Ultimate Association resulted in the following people being re-elected to the executive positions: President: John Kristensen; Vice-President: Jemery Day; Secretary: Masni Bennett; Treasurer: Felix Kennedy. The TUA Committee also appointed David Cooke as the TUA's new Public Officer. Congratulations to all those elected to represent the Tasmanian ultimate community for the coming year. Minutes and reports from the AGM will be available on the meetings page in the coming week.
March 23 The last minor round (round nine) of the Summer Social League has been played. Despite losing to the bottom team, Cocaine managed to hold on to second place in the social beginner league table, ensuring that they play Wobblies in the grand final, with Budgies and A Whiter Shade of Pale playing off for third place. Only two points separated the teams ranked from 2nd to 4th. The table in social intermediate was also very tight with only 4 points separating the top 5 teams. Parma's lead in the social intermediate league table slipped to a single point and they will face GrassHOPpers in the grand final. GrassHOPpers won their "qualifying final" over Bonkers, pushing Bonkers down one place into the 5th place playoff against Black & Blue. The Dirty Three and Huckasaurus playoff for 3rd place. Don't forget the finals night BBQ and presentations to follow the finals.
March 16 Round eight of the Summer Social League has been played. Wobblies win has ensured that they will finish top of the social beginner league table and have a place in the grand final. Cocaine managed to move into second place, swapping places with Budgies, and one more win would see them take the other place in the grand final. Parma has skipped out to a 2 point lead in the social intermediate league table, but there is still only two points separating the next 4 teams, so any of the top 5 teams could still make the grand final. The next games (the last round of pre-finals games) see first versus third place and second versus fourth place on the current league table.
March 15 Congratulations to Bad Apples who qualified for Nationals (formally the Australian Ultimate Championships to be held in Adelaide in April) on the weekend by finishing in fifth place at the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships in Melbourne. Bad Apples managed to beat Chilli B 13-12 after time cap was called at 10-10, despite only having 6 male players left for this game (ably supplemented by Shelly and Emily in the last game to make 8 players). Given that there were only 5 places available to the Southern region, this was a very high pressure last game - and Chilli B were playing at home with a full squad (of around 20 players). Congratulations also to Mike Baker for winning the Most Valuable Player award. The combined Tasmanian/Victorian team in the women's division, Victas, also managed to qualify for Nationals, despite finishing 5th out of the five women's teams.
March 9 Round seven of the Summer Social League has been played and while there were no changes to the social beginner league table, the top team Wobblies suffered a shock loss to third place Cocaine, the first loss of the season for the Wobblies. This result means that Wobblies minor premiership is still not certain, but it now looks likely that Budgies and Cocaine will be fighting for second spot and a place in the grand final. The results in the intermediate division see 4 teams equal in points in places 2 to 5 on the social intermediate league table. Former top team Bonkers slid to 4th place on the table following a public holiday forfeit. Parma took over first position despite only managing a draw against 6th ranked Black & Blue and The Dirty Three managed to sneak up to second place, despite losing to 5th ranked GrasHOPpers. The top 5 teams are now only separated by 2 points. Full results to date, team lists and the full game schedule are still available.
March 8 Good luck to Bad Apples and Victas who are travelling to Melbourne this weekend to try to qualify for Nationals by playing the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships in the open and women's divisions respectively.
March 3 Round six of the Summer Social League has been played, corresponding to two complete rounds in the social beginner division. While there were no changes to the social beginner league table, only 2 points separate the bottom three teams and it looks like the race is on for second place and a place in the grand final against the undefeated Wobblies. As long as the Wobblies avoid a forfeit in the next three games, they are guaranteed to finish top of the table at the end of the minor rounds. The results in the social intermediate division were much more interesting. Bonkers keep their lead in the social intermediate league table despite their second loss in two weeks, this time to third placed The Dirty Three. Second placed Parma also suffered a loss against 5th placed GrassHOPpers. The top 5 teams are now only separated by 3 points. Full results to date, team lists and the full game schedule are all now available.

February

February 23 Round five of the Summer Social League has been played. There are no changes to the social beginner league table, with Wobblies undefeated at the top and Budgies maintaining second position with a two throw score after time cap to snatch a draw against third placed Cocaine. Results in intermediate division were much more interesting. Bonkers keep their lead in the social intermediate league table despite a loss to bottom team Black & Blue, with Parma closing on the leaders moving in to second place and The Dirty Three slipping into third place following a forfeit. Full results to date, preliminary team lists and the full game scheduleare now available.
February 20 Congratulations to David Cooke, the very deserving AFDA Volunteer of the Month for January.
February 16 Round four of the Summer Social League has been played. The still undefeated Wobblies stay at the top of the social beginner league table with Budgies sneaking up to second place. Bonkers won the top of the table clash against Parma and keep their lead in the social intermediate league table, with The Dirty Three moving into second place.
February 9 The third week of games of the Summer Social League have been played. There are no changes at the top of the social beginner league table with Wobblies undefeated with 3 straight wins, but Cocaine have made a move up to second place. Bonkers have taken over the lead from Parma in the social intermediate league table, with both teams having three straight wins. Full results to date and preliminary team lists are available, with the full game schedule still coming soon.
February 3 The second week of games of the Summer Social League have been played. There are no changes at the top of the respective league tables with Parma maintaining their lead in the social intermediate league table and Wobblies in the social beginner league table. Full results to date and preliminary team lists are now available The full game schedule will be available soon. Remember, league games will be held every Monday from now until March 29, including the Regatta Day and Labour Day public holiday Mondays.
February 2 The minutes of the December TUA meeting are now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA committee meeting will be held on Thursday February 4 at the Duke, 192 Macquarie Street, Hobart (corner of Macquarie and Barrack Streets). Come along if you want to help run the TUA and to ensure we have an active and vibrant ultimate community.

January

January 24 Congratulations to Steven Wright and Tim Stoneman who have both been selected on the Australian under 19 open squad. The final team to go to the 2010 World Championships in August in Germany will be selected from this squad after they play together as a team in the Australian Ultimate Championships in April.
January 22 The first week of games of the Summer Social League have been played. Parma have taken the early lead in the social intermediate league table and Wobblies have taken the early lead in the social beginner league table. Team lists, game schedule and results for the social beginner division will be available soon. The league has a one week break on January 25 (Australia Day long weekend) but feel free to turn up from 6pm for a casual pickup game, with teams formed on the night.
January 18 Registration is still open for the Summer Social League, with the first round of games being played tonight going through until March 29 2010. If you haven't registered already, get in touch with league organiser Andrew Binny as soon as possible, so he can see if there is still space for you on a team.
