TUA Old News, 2003

December

December 9 White Knights took the double, defeating minor premiers Headless Chook 8-4 in the final of the Monday night Spring League and winning the spirit prize. White Knights didn't win a game in the first 6 games, after which they were undefeated for the rest of the season. As for prizes, Sam Jesney won the most improved, Craig Mundy won the best recruiter, Jayden Weston the style in the final and Lucy Line won the guts in the final. Registration for Summer League is still open. Late registration fees will apply if you want to pay after Summer league starts (January 19) - so find Asher and pay up now!
December 3 Headless Chook still lead the league table for the Monday night Spring League. The last round (for double points) will be played at 6pm on Monday December 8, followed by the Grand final from 7pm and a BBQ afterwards. This is also the last day to get the earlybird discount for summer league registrations.

November

November 30 The sixth and final round of the 2003 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships saw All Bounced Out take the game and the 2003 Championships, defeating Planet Red 12-6. Watch out for a revamped TUC, likely to be played under lights on weeknights in 2004.
November 19 Earlybird registration for the Monday night Summer League is now open. This league runs for 10 weeks from January 19, 2004, and you can register for $15 ($10 concession) + AFDA fees if you pay by December 8. Standard registration will cost $20 ($15 concession).
November 18 The Tassie Tiggers are going to Nationals in Brisbane in April 2004 to play in the Open Division. If you are interested in playing in this team, get in touch with Mike Baker by November 30. There is some chance of a composite team forming in the Women's division - again talk to Mike if you are interested in this option.
November 14 This 6th and final round of the 2003 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships, has been rescheduled for Sunday November 30, 8:30-10:00am.
November 7 This upcoming 6th round of the 2003 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships, scheduled for November 9, has been cancelled at late notice. This game will be rescheduled soon.
November 3 Headless Chook have taken an early lead in the league table for the Monday night Spring League. The $5 late fee for registrations after the league starts now applies!

October

October 29 The Uni Oval is now open for lunch time games, following the October closure for maintenance. Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime games will no longer be played on the Rugby Field. Probably best to start treating the cricket pitch fairly carefully again!
October 27 Congratulations to: WOM for finishing 14th (out of 25 teams) at Mixed Nationals; Shavawn Donoghue for winning the female MVP award at Mixed Nationals; and the Tassie Two-Hat for taking out the AFDA Tournament of the Year Award for 2003.
October 20 Spring League started on Monday October 20 with 4 teams and lots of new players. The $5 late fee for registrations after the league starts will now kick in from Monday November 3. Registrations at standard rates can still be paid next Monday - but make sure you get there early - correct change would be appreciated as well!
October 19 What He Said took out the all important Spirit prize at the 5th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Robin Fleming won the play of the day award, and for the first time ever, the Two-Hat gods conspired to create a stacked team, which remained undefeated all day. Go Fish won every game, although Freshly Picked played very well in the final, taking an early 2-0 lead, and remained ahead or level of Go Fish until just before the end of the game, with Go Fish scraping through to win the final by a single point. October 15 The deadline for standard registration fees has been stretched again for the 5th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, $40 for AFDA members, as along as you register and pay by October 17. If you have already registered, you can check your registration details and check to see if your payment has been accepted. If you don't know how to pay, check out the payment details page! Registration on the day will cost $45 for AFDA members!
October 13 Spring League starts on Monday October 20. Remember that there is a $5 surcharge for any registration after the league starts. Registrations at standard rates can be paid on the first night of the league - but make sure you get there early if you want to pay on the night!
October 10 CSIRO has just taken out the latest CSIRO/Uni Challenge 10-9 in a very close game in windy conditions.

September

September 30 Free come and try sessions will be held from 5:30-7:30pm for the next two Monday evenings at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. These sessions are aimed at new players who want to play the Spring League, which starts on Monday October 20. Registration for the Spring League is still open!
September 29 Ken Suber has just set a new course record for the St David's Park disc golf course. Ken's score of 3 under par included birdies on holes 2, 3 and 5 and par on every other hole.
September 28 The Uni Oval is closed for maintenance for the next 3-4 weeks. Games normally played on this oval, including lunchtime games and Mixed Nationals training sessions, will be played on the Rugby Field until further notice.
September 18 Registration for Spring League, which starts on Monday October 20, has just opened. Note that there is a discount on league fees for new outdoor league players who also play the Two-Hat.
September 16 The Tasmanian team for Mixed Nationals in October 2003, WOM, consists of the following players: Asher Gentle, Alex de Vries, Cari Deyell, Christian Martin, David Cooke, Jemery Day, Joe Boyer, Kate Godber, Lucy Line, Leslie Sage, Madeleine Cahill, Martina Alvarez, Mike Baker, Shavawn Donoghue and Stan Robert. Congratulations to all those selected to the team.
September 8 Minutes of the September 4 TUA committee meeting are now available. The next TUA meeting is scheduled for November 13.
September 7 The fourth round of the 2003 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships saw a walk over with Planet Red assembling an impressive 7 players and All Bounced Out forfeiting with only 4 players turning up on time. Talk to one of the TUCOs, Shavawn or Jeff if you want to play in a future TUC.
September 2 Lost without Robin won the recently completed Winter Indoor League, after finishing 3rd at the completion of the minor round, dispatching Filou in the qualifying final and then beating minor premiers Dark Horse in the final. Dark Horse won the spirit competition. Full details of this league are now available on the league history page.

August 10 The third round of the 2003 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships saw another hotly contested game with All Bounced Out beating Planet Red 9-4. Talk to one of the TUCOs, Shavawn or Jeff if you want to play in a future TUC.
August 7 There will be a Tasmanian team attending Mixed Nationals in October 2003. If you want to play, make sure you let Shavawn know. To be eligible to play on this team, a $70 deposit is required. More details soon.
August 5 Details of the recently developed St David's Park disc golf course are now available. Talk to Ken if you want to play a lunchtime round.
August 4 Lost without Robin return to the top of the league ladder after 4 weeks of the Winter Indoor League. Only 4 more weeks of the season!
August 3 The third round of the Tasmanian Ultimate Championships is coming up on Sunday August 10, with All Bounced Out facing up against the Team without a Name. Talk to one of the TUCOs, Shavawn or Jeff if you want to join a team.
August 1 CSIRO took out the latest CSIRO/Uni Challenge with a score of 11-2 at points cap. Unusually, this game reached the points cap well before the time cap, so the game continued unofficially to a score of 14-5, or thereabouts.

July

July 4 The next Indoor League is going ahead on Monday nights from July 14 to September 1. After a few technical problems, some modifications to the start and finish dates, and a reduction in fees, earlybird electronic registration is available again, as long as you register electronically and pay your money by Monday July 14. If you want to play in Winter League, register now, and bring some friends along!

July 2 The viability of the next Indoor League is currently in the balance. If you want to play and haven't told Jeff Dunn already, let him know now. Otherwise the next season (July-August) may have to be cancelled. If you can recruit some new players, that would be even better still!

June 28 The inaugural Philip Redneck Ruddock Disc Golf Classic has been held in St. David's Park over 6 holes. Rumour has it that the first winner was Leslie, and that the competitor with the highest score was Dan. We wish them success in their next round of disc golf in Canada.

June 25 Four players with Tasmanian connections have made the squad selected to attend the National training camp in Sydney in July. Australian teams to play at Worlds in Finland in 2004 will eventually be selected from these squads. Congratulations to Shavawn, Stan, Ian (now resident in Canberra) and Mike (about to move to Hobart).
June 24 The first half of the Winter Indoor League is over with Purrhaps clinching the league title with a last game draw against runners up, HuckItToMe. If HuckItToMe had won this last game, rumour has it that they may have taken out the title on WinLossTie record. Purple Frisbee Eaters took out the spirit prize. June 22 The Long Knights Tournament went off with a bang despite some cold weather and cold fingers. Thanks to TD Jeff and goodbye to those who are departing soon, Dan, Leslie, Jocelyn, Tom (and Felix who has already gone). Come back soon! Thanks to Stan for providing the venue for the farewell post tourney bonfire. The end...
June 21 Tiggers Christian and Alice have made it to Darwin! Darwin bound
June 17 Earlybird registration is now closed for the Long Knights Tournament. However, standard registration is still available right up until the tournament. Rumour has it there will be a bonfire and party at Oyster Cove after the tournament.
June 16 With only one round remaining in the Winter Indoor League, a late season surge of victories sees HuckItToMe move off the bottom of the league ladder into 2nd position. The final round is on Monday June 23rd, with all 3 games counting for double points.
June 15 The 2003 season of the Tasmanian Ultimate Championships started with a tight game with Team 2 beating Team 1 17-15, or thereabouts. Talk to one of the TUCOs, Shavawn or Jeff if you want to play in a future TUC.
June 5 The Winter Indoor League has a break this week. No game on the public holiday on Monday June 9.

May

May 20 Discount earlybird registration is now open for the Long Knights Tournament.

May 13 The Winter Indoor League has started with three teams and three games per night, and now runs from 6:30-8:00pm. Feel free to turn up early to warm up! There will be no game on the public holiday, Monday June 9.
May 6 After the first night of the Winter Indoor League more players are still needed! Sign up - or encourage some beginners to play. Registration is still open.
May 2 Electronic Certificates of Currency, listing full details of the TUA insurance policy are now available.

April

April 29 The earlybird discount registration for the Winter Indoor League is no longer available. Registration is still open, but standard fees now apply. A new AFDA fee structure is also effective from today.
April 28 The Tassie Tiggers have just returned from a very successful Nationals campaign, ending up with a final ranking of 12th, from 20 open teams, and playing with an initial seeding of 19th. The Tiggers also claimed a victory over the 9th ranked (and 9th seeded) team, WArlocks from Perth, although other results saw the Tiggers eventually ranked below WArlocks. The Tassie Tiggers were the only team in the Open Division to include women in their team. Last but not least, the Tiggers also won the spirit prize, repeating the 2002 spirit victories of Choice Cuts (Open, Tasmania) and Vacant Air (Women's - joint team with Tasmania and Victoria). Congratulations also to Shavawn Donoghue for her election to the AFDA Board as Director of Human Resources. Worra Worra Worra

March 28 The next CSIRO/Uni Challenge will be held on Friday April 4, from 12:45-1:55pm.
March 27 The pre-Nationals serious games are now being played an hour earlier from 5-6:30pm on Sundays and until Nationals will now be held weekly for the next three weeks. The next game is on Sunday March 30. Players who are not on the Nationals team are welcome to come along for a hard game.
March 26 Minutes of the IGM of the TUA are now available on the Committee Meeting page. Also included on this page is a link to the TUA constitution. The next meeting of the TUA (mostly to discuss winter league) will be on Thursday March 27 at 5:00pm at Shippies. A draft agenda is available.
March 18 The Grand final of Summer League was taken out by G-force, defeating Whammo 17-8, more or less, with Tequila Bats defeating Kapow by about 8-4 in the playoff for 3rd place. Kapow took out the spirit prize, Shavawn won the top recruiter award (after recruiting most of the Whammo team as new players), Alice and Ewan took the style and guts awards respectively for their play in the final, and Mawson took out the most improved new player award. Thanks to Leslie for her work as League Co-ordinator! Full results (including spirit scores) are now on the League History page, which includes all results and award winners from previous leagues.
March 18 The Tasmanian Ultimate Association has now been formed and has a constitution, after a successful and short IGM, held after the league finals. Elected positions include Jemery (President), Jeff (Vice President), Shavawn (Treasurer) and Madeleine (Secretary). Minutes of the IGM will be made available soon, and an application for incorporation should follow as soon as the paperwork has been completed.
March 12 Full minor round results of the Summer League are now available. The Grand final will be played between G-force and Whammo, with Tequila Bats and Kapow playing off for 3rd and 4th. Don't forget the IGM of the Tasmanian Ultimate Association at the BBQ's after the grand final, followed by presentations of the league awards.

February 27 Due to a pretty bad weather forecast for this weekend, the Bruny Beach Hat Tournament has just been cancelled! Sorry...
February 17 Electronic registration for Tasmania's first beach ultimate tournament, the Bruny Beach Hat Tournament is now open. The tournament proper is on Saturday March 1, but why not make a weekend of it, check out Bruny Island and camp at the Neck?
February 15 Minutes of the last TUA meeting are now available. A time and date has been set for the Inaugural General Meeting of the Tasmanian Ultimate Association, 7:30pm at the barbecue shelter near Sandown, following the grand final of the Summer league. Come along if you want to be involved in running ultimate in Tasmania. If you are really keen, you can check out the proposed TUA constitution.
February 7 There has been a change of date for the next TUA meeting to Thursday Feb 13, 6-8pm, following on from a special league forum, to discuss issues like how to develop our current league and on field sex-ratios. Sam Waugh from the VFDA will be around from 5-6pm at Shippies in Battery Point to give a Victorian perspective on some of these issues. The TUA meeting will follow on from this forum. All welcome.

January

January 30 Nationals training has now moved to Tuesdays 5-7pm, with fortnightly serious games 6-7:30pm on Sundays. Next sessions February 2 and February 4. Talk to Shavawn, Tom or Stan if you want to play or train with the team.
January 28 Results of the first round of the Summer League are now available. These will be updated weekly, so look on this page regularly if you want to see the league scores. In addition, the Captain's Handbook is now available - check out the link from the Summer League page if you are interested to know what your captain should be doing - and some more details about what is expected at social league.
January 23 The first Nationals training session for 2003 will be on Monday January 27 from 4-6pm. Talk to Shavawn, Tom or Stan if you want to play or train with the team.
January 20 The Summer League starts today 5:45pm at Sandown Park. If you haven't already registered you can probably still get on a team - but you have now missed out on the early registration discount.
January 17 Minutes of the January TUA meeting are now available, including the final budget for the Spring League.
January 15 The early registration discount for the Summer League has been extended. To obtain this discount you need to register on the web and pay your fees by Friday January 17. This league starts on Monday January 20.
January 9 The next TUA meeting will be on Thursday January 16, 8:30pm at Madeleine's place - agenda items include: Nationals, summer league, beach tourney and women's development day.
